Trail Patrol Clears Big Bluff Trail Print

Thursday, April 9, The Trail Patrol met at the trail with tools and safety gear.  Cookies were provided.  Dwan's email about the work day is as follows:

" Got'er done! - We had a hardy bunch that braved the elements this morning and worked like Trojans to open up the Big Bluff Trail.  I'm delighted to say that we completed clearing the trail of all the ice storm debris.  That's not to say that our work is done.  There's still limb dragging and some tread work to attend to, but the downed trees have been moved and many limbs cleared off the path.

I noticed that the drainage cuts that we made on our fledgling outing worked like a charm...there was definite evidence of water flowing OFF of the trail at those points."

Trail Patrol Clears Big Bluff Trail

Members of the Trail Patrol team of the North Central Arkansas Master Naturalists successfully cleared the Bluff Trail at Bull-Shoals White River State Park last Thursday. All the brush and large trees across the trail have been removed from the trail tread.  The trail patrol will continue to work on this, their adopted trail, to improve and maintain it.

The Trail Patrol will next assist the Corps of Engineers in clearing the Bidwell trail.  This trail, as many in the area, was hard hit by our ice storm.

March 7 - Trail Maintenance Training - The Trail Patrol
By Gay Vekovius, NC Arkansas Master Naturalist

Three members of the Central Arkansas Master Naturalist group, based in Little Rock, came to the Bull Shoals-White River State Park last Saturday to provide training in trail maintenance.
Many of our local trails are now impassable due to our ice storm, and all have debris to clear.  The problem:  resources aren’t available to accomplish the clean-up.  Agency owners of trails are under-funded, under-staffed and over-worked.  Just as our lovely spring weather invites us outside to enjoy and reconnect with nature our trail resources are in bad shape.

With the information and encouragement provided to North Central Master Naturalists-in-training, work on local trails can advance.
Bert Turner taught basic trail design, maintenance and philosophy.  He, and Bill Toland assisted by Martha Bowden demonstrated useful tools that can be carried by trail teams to accomplish needed work.  The afternoon was spent in actually identifying and solving some of the problems on the Bluff Trail at Bull Shoals-White River State Park, but considerable work needs doing before that trail can open.

Dwan Garrison from the local Master Naturalist group is organizing the Trail Patrol to address our trail problems.  As this effort gets underway look for more information about how you can help.  Julie Lovett, Park Interpreter at the State Park can provide additional information on trail conditions and on the plans of the Trail Patrol.
