Items below represent most of the venues or activities that qualifies for our volunteer hours. For specific dates for activiities, please log in and refer to the Calendar of Events.  You don't have to log in to see the public events we post from time to time.

Arkansas State Parks

CAMN Greenhouse at PMSP
  • If you like to "play in the dirt" and want to learn more about native plants, the greenhouse is a great place to volunteer. Leo Sufka is the leader for the greenhouse at Pinnacle Mountain State Park.

PMSP Animal Enclosures

Help maintain the animal enclosures at the Visitor's Center. Learn how to clean fish tanks, make beds, etc.
Staff will train. Can work as little or as much as you want. Contact Susan at Pinnacle Mountain State Park for
          more information.

Citizen Science Programs:  These are just a few that we are involved in.

  • Project Budburst - a unique citizen science study has just started.   Join thousands of others in gathering valuable environmental and climate change information from across the country. Project BudBurst engages the public in making careful observations of the phenophases such as first leafing, first flower, and first fruit ripening of a diversity of trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses in their local area.
  • Citizen Science Survey for Wrens - especially for a rare and declining species called the Bewick's Wren.  Audubon is looking for volunteers to help find the birds.   Fall and winter are prime times to find the Bewick's Wrens in Central Arkansas.  Follow this link to the  Audubon website which  has more information on this project.

Habitat for Wildlife

  • Wildlife needing homes right now are birds and bats.  Join Tim Ferrell as he guides the committee by making the houses, planning where to place them, and creating the habitat.
Interpretation/Trail Guides
  • Bill Toland, our Interpretation committee chair, has provided us with written interpretive guides to lead the community around the trails at Pinnacle Mountain State Park.  Using these, volunteers have lead many school groups at the State Park.
  • Using the knowledge we have gained during training,  we are asked to lead a group or teach a short class at a school.

Outdoor Schools and Nature Centers

  •  Arkansas Outdoor School at the C.A. Vines Arkansas 4-H center, west of Little Rock, offers many opportunities for volunteers to work in the classroom or on the trails.  Contact Joel at 501-821-6884 to volunteer.  A...@uaex.edu or visit them online at www.kidsarus.org/arkoutdoorschool.htm
Stream Team
  • Join us at the Kingfisher Trail at Pinnacle Mountain State Park as we monitor the water quality of the Little Maumelle River for the AGFC.   We will assess the state of the riparian zone, then wade into the stream to discover the biological and chemical changes each season.  Each year we provide an advanced training date in addition to the quarterly sampling.   Stream Team Coordinator is George Lauster.

Trail Maintenance and Trail Construction

  • CAMN is working on a lot of trails in central Arkansas and there are a lot more we can work on if we have enough volunteers.  You can work on or adopt trails in any of our state parks, city parks, Central Arkansas Water property, Audubon, Arkansas Game and Fish areas, or many others that may be close to your home or near-and-dear to your heart.  You could also join one of our existing crews that have already adopted a variety of trails.  For members only:  to see a list of those working specific trails, click here.
  • CAMN Adopt-a-Trail
    • Burns Park  - Burt Turner will help you find the right trail or just a portion of the trail for you to adopt at Burns Park, Gillam Park, Allsopp Park or the Big Dam Bridge.
    • Bell Slough Trail Team - Bruce Walls is the trail wrangler for Bell Slough.
  • CAMN TRAIL CONSTRUCTION
    • Under the leadership of Bert Turner, many new trails have been completed.

CAMN Administration/Committee Chairs

  • As with any organization, leaders are needed to organize the events that makes this chapter an exciting place to volunteer. Theses skills can help make us grow as a group to be better volunteers in our community.

USGS has  a volunteer program.  Their needs vary--sometimes they don't really need anyone, other times they can use someone to go out in the field to help, or someone to enter data.
