First Cottonmouth this year seen at Bell Slough Print
Central Arkansas Master Naturalist
Written by Martha Bowden

The Bell Slough Trail Team was working this weekend.  Cottonmouth at Bell Slough by Martha Bowden Saturday was cool, 52 degrees and this cottonmouth was active.  We gave the snake a wide berth as we continued our way down the trail. This was a surprise to us as we normally don't see them until later in the spring.

Arkansas Game and Fish has an excellent article on Cottonmouths. Click here to link to AGFC's article on Cottonmouths.

We also saw Spring Beauty flowers, Trout Lilies getting ready to bloom and Red Buckeye leaves.    When the Trout Lilies bloom, it is certainly worth the trip to Bell Slough to see the hillside full of yellow.

New Housing for Birds at Gillam Park Print
Central Arkansas Master Naturalist
Written by Frank Otto

On Sunday, March 7th, four CAMN members (well, 3 members and a NIT) met at the Pinnacle greenhouse to "put together" birdhouses.

Turns out we started from scratch to mark and cut out 40 kits, then assembled 10 for the Audubon people to install in the park.  I'm the NIT and bad at names but the three members were Tim, Leo and Dwayne.   It was a nice day to soak up the sun and do a little work.

Gillam Park is Audubon's newest nature center with trails.  CAMN has been working on the trail system there and just completed a new one to the glades.  The  Glades trail , along with the others, will be used for interpretation for school  programs.  This link will take you to their website where you can learn more about the nature center and the Audubon programs.

CAMN's newest volunteer opportunity is the Habitat for Wildlife Committee.  For more information, contact Tim Ferrell  with the private message email. For more ways that CAMN makes a difference see the Volunteer page.
