A group of Central Arkansas Master Naturalists descended upon one of our planet's vortices of power Sat., Nov. 14. We met mid-morning at Ron Coleman's Mine and Rock Shop located north of Hot Springs. You will see from the accompanying photo that we were exposed to many moments of delight and amazement. It was interesting to see how each Master Naturalist went about their mission. Ann Lewis and Bonnie Fincher chose to work in the "muddier" areas of the mine while Carol Moseley and her husband, Dave, sat on the edge of a high precipice to watch their rejected finds roll down the long slope. Neuman Coleman was the most systematic as he went about his work in a "red" area as if he were doing an archeaological dig. Jason Doss and his stepdaughter, Rebecca, worked a promising area at the western edge of the mine. Bob Stewart moved from site to site as did I, trying to see who was having the best luck. Leo Sufka worked to enlarge a hole he had found as well as search the most recent "dumps". Tim Ferrell made some impressive finds in the recent "dumps" as well. We had a short visit with shop manager and viewed a nice video that told the story of quartz crystal formation and how they process them for sale. This was a most interesting geologic experience and we have the dirty, stained clothes to prove it. We also have some beautiful crystals to keep and/or share with friends and family. I believe we will try to do this again and perhaps explore some of the other mines in the area. Maybe some of our finds will make it to the next general meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19!
